Student/Member Wagner Schulz at the Console of St. Bartholomew's Church NYC during the New York P.O.E.
During the summer of 2006, I had the privilege of attending the Pipe Organ Encounter in New York City, and also the privilege of playing a pipe organ in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
During June, I visited family and friends in my home country of Brazil, and attended a school there for a month as a guest student. While there, I played an organ in Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was a small 24 rank mechanical action organ in a basilica called Basilica NossaSenhora do Carmo. I also had the opportunity to meet Professor Jose de Aquino from Sao Paulo University. I went to his residence and for two hours, I got to play his 3-manual organ, imported from Europe.
During July, I spent a week at the POE in New York City and had the opportunity of listening to and hearing many wonderful pipe organs in the Manhattan area. We stayed at the St. Thomas Boy Choir School. Many wonderful organists were present at this event, including Thomas Schmidt, cantor at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, who was my personal instructor for the week. I also attended a German Master Class hosted by Dr. Walter Hilse at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, and met Paul Jacobs, Concert Organist and Teacher at the Julliard School.
The final recital, which lasted four hours, was held at St. Bartholomew's Church. We also heard the New York Philharmonic Orchestra play Beethoven's Fifth and other works in Central Park. I played Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. one of my favorite works.
I would like to thank the Clearwater AGO Chapter for awarding me a scholarship from the Grom Education Fund, so that I could have this wonderful opportunity of attending the POE in New York. It was a really enjoyable and memorable experience, and I look forward to making plans to attend a POE in the summer of 2007.
